Configuring Shipping Methods and Tiers in Shopify 

Shopify lets you configure shipping methods at checkout, including creating tiers or upgrades based on Average Order Value (AOV).

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Access Shipping Settings

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings.
  2. Click on Shipping and delivery.

2. Setting Up Basic Shipping Rates

  1. In the Shipping section, click the shipping profile that you want to edit.
  2. Next to the shipping zone you want to add a rate to, click Add rate.
  3. Choose between setting a custom flat rate or a calculated rate based on the carrier.
  4. If you select a custom flat rate:
    1. Enter the name for the rate (e.g., "Standard Shipping")
    2. Set the shipping rate amount
    3. Optionally, add a delivery description (e.g., "Ships in 3-5 business days")
  5. If you select a calculated rate: Choose the carrier and service (e.g., AusPost)
  6. Optionally, add conditions based on weight or price if needed
  7. Click Done, and then click Save.

3. Creating Free Shipping Rates

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery
  2. In the Shipping section, click the shipping profile that you want to edit
  3. For each shipping zone, add the free shipping rate: 
    1. Click Add rate 
    2. Enter the name for the rate (e.g., "Free Shipping")
    3. Set the Price field to 0
    4. Click Done, and then click Save.
To offer free shipping over a certain order value:
    1. Click Add rate
    2. Enter the name for the rate (e.g., "Free Shipping over $50")
    3. Set the Price field to 0
    4. Click Add conditions
    5. Select Based on order price
    6. Enter the minimum order value
    7. Click Done, and then click Save.

4. Creating Shipping Tiers Based on AOV

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery
  2. In the Shipping section, click the shipping profile that you want to edit
  3. For each shipping zone, add the tiered shipping rates:
    1. Click Add rate
    2. Enter the name for the rate (e.g., "Standard Shipping")
    3. Set the shipping rate amount
    4. Click Add conditions
    5. Select Based on order price
    6. Enter the minimum and maximum order values for this tier (e.g., $0 - $49.99)
    7. Click Done, and then click Save.

    To add an upgrade option (e.g., Express Shipping): (e.g., $50 and above)
    1. Click Add rate
    2. Enter the name for the rate (e.g., "Express Shipping")
    3. Set the shipping rate amount
    4. Click Add conditions
    5. Select Based on order price
    6. Enter the minimum order value for this upgrade (e.g., $50 and above)
    7. Click Done, and then click Save.

5. Customising Delivery Options

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Shipping and delivery
  2. In the Delivery customisations section, click Manage
  3. Click Add customisation to add new delivery options.
  4. Configure the customisation as needed, and then click Save
  5. Click Activate to enable the customisation.

Additional Tips

  • Local Delivery and Pickup: If you offer local delivery or in-store pickup, make sure to set these options in the Shipping and delivery settings. You can specify the locations and conditions for these delivery methods.
