Including your products' country of origin and Harmonised System Codes are essential for smooth international shipping.
Why are these important?
- Harmonised System Codes, or HS codes, play a crucial role in customs procedures, ensuring accurate duties & taxes are applied to shipments. Each HS code represents a specific product category or subcategory, making it easier for customs authorities to process shipments.
- A product's Country of Origin, or COO, helps in determining duties & taxes rates, import quotas that are regulated according to where your product was originally manufactured.
Add your products' HS codes and COO on Shopify by following these steps:
- Head to your Shopify store and click on Products.
- Under Shipping select "Include customs information for international shipping".
- Choose the country of origin (where your product or item is manufactured).
- Once done, search for your product's HS code by using relevant keywords. For this example, we're looking at cotton shirts and you'll want to choose the description that best matches your items.
- Once these are saved, anytime an order is placed for this particular product, both the HS code and COO will be automatically added.
You may also update HS codes in bulk by following the steps below:

From your Shopify admin, go to Products.

Check the products that you want to modify.

Click Bulk edit.

Click Columns.

In the Shipping section, click Harmonised system code.

Edit your products as necessary, and then click Save.
